Justice for Breonna Taylor and Kenneth Walker
The Kentucky Alliance was founded over 40 years ago by Anne Braden, Angela Davis, Suzy Post, and Bob Cunningham because of the history of racism in Louisville and this country as a whole. Our mission is to inform the public and provide a channel for public debate and discussion concerning the human and constitutional rights of all peoples; to bring together diverse groups of people to support those repressed for racist or political reasons; and to work to end racist practices in the community and government. The Alliance has always believed that progress will come as a result of all of us working together to dismantle racism and restore justice to the community. And we believe there are multiple ways of achieving this.
Today marked Day Sixty at Injustice Square and over the course of sixty days, we have lived up to and lived out our mission statement tenfold. Since the occupation of Injustice Square, we have fed thousands of people in this City, provided shelter for dozens of houseless people, cultivated a community garden, held political education sessions, provided jail support for protestors who were arrested, had a Juneteenth celebration, and nightly marches. We’ve created space for Books and Breakfast, worship services, prayer walks, video shoots, arts and crafts, voter registration drives, candidate forums, and the list goes on- not to mention a 24 hour occupation that lasted 16 days. Each day at Injustice Square has been met with a new challenge, whether it’s from Mayor Fischer’s office or LMPD.
Our intention in holding space at Injustice Square has been simple- remain visible in the face of a system that is corrupt; a system that killed Breonna Taylor and subsequently David McAtee and allowed someone like Steven Lopez to be in the streets instead of getting the help he needed, ultimately resulting in the death of our comrade, Tyler Gerth. Our intention in holding this space has been to create community and allow the emergence of leaders and resistance in a way that empowers and uplifts everyone. People from various backgrounds, race, religion, and ages- chose to come together and create this community that consists of medics, chefs, artists, athletes, gardeners, preachers, mothers, fathers, teachers, mentors, volunteers, allies. All of whom are fed up with the corrupt system that has been allowed to fester within LMPD and this mayoral administration, all with a common goal to resist and disrupt. And in the midst of that, we collectively did something this City has never seen before- created a microcosm of society in the Square all in the name of love and justice.
The Alliance will continue to hold space at Injustice Square until the officers who killed Breonna Taylor are fired, arrested, and charged. But this will look different as the days/weeks go on. While we will still maintain a daily presence at Injustice Square, we are volunteer led and ran, and we have begun to look at next steps in facilitating structural change within the City. Food will still be served on a daily basis and political education sessions, as well as things to support our mental, physical and spiritual health- such as yoga classes- will continue to take place. And for anyone with inquiries regarding volunteer help and events, all event information and a list of needs can be found on our Injustice Square Facebook page, which is updated daily.
We have been blown away by the love, intention, and community that has come forth in this City. And everyone at the Alliance is committed to seeing justice and transformation that honors the purpose for which this organization was created, and that serves the community and families directly impacted by the injustices of LMPD, the Fischer administration, and every previous administration that did not have the courage to do something about it.
The Kentucky Alliance would like to thank everyone for their support, generous donations and contributions in our fight for justice for Breonna Taylor and all those who have experienced police brutality, prison reform, and the fight against systemic racism.
Thank you from the KAARPR Board
